Frank Stella Nemrik, from the Near East Series, 1999 is a chaotically vibrant work that encapsulates Stella's abstract style so poignantly. Using a mix of bright, neon colors, Stella captures the eye and draws your attention through the work while also using a thick black line the guide the viewer throughout the sections of the work. Using varying line weights to generate different patterns, we are transported into the work and can feel the rush of energy as the gestural shapes jump forth from the paper. Lattices and spirals are carefully placed, layered by collages of different shapes and forms to create and undulating work. The thick dark blue boarder helps contain the chaotic nature of the work to the page, allowing the viewer to focus deeply on every section of the work and allow their minds to wander to the East, the inspiration for this work.
Created in 1995, this screen print, relief, etching, lithograph, engraving, and stencils on white TGL handmade paper is hand-signed by Frank Stella (Massachusetts, 1936 - New York, 2024) in pencil and is numbered from the edition of 60 in pencil in the lower left margin. Published by Tyler Graphics, Ltd., with the blind stamp lower right.
