Fernand Léger Le Pauvre Songe (The Poor Man Dreams), 1949 from Les Illuminations is an enchanting work with a whimsical quality. Abstract forms in red, blue and yellow ink dance gracefully in the center of the work. Over these fields of color, the artist imposes several lines of poetry in black ink which move laterally across the page. These verses originate from Arthur Rimbaud’s original poem, Le Pauvre Songe, from which the title of this work is derived. Leger writes the first two verses in delicate cursive in the lower hemisphere of the work which translate to “Maybe an evening awaits me / Where I will drink in peace.”
