Fernand Léger Composition aux dominos (Composition with Dominoes), 1947 is a collaborative work between Léger and Guy Spitzer to reproduce a work that was based on a painting Léger had created previously created. Incredibly bold and vibrant colors leap off the page, instantly attracting your attention and acting as a guide as it leads your eyes around the composition. Bright yellows, reds, and greens sharply contrast the sparing use of black and white throughout the image, allowing levity and bringing a weightlessness to an otherwise congested piece. In the center of the composition, an abstracted branch or root rest vertically, which overlaps the white layer beneath; dominoes are scattered at the bottom, laying in a pool of white, black and yellow paint. In the bottom left corner we see homage to a traditional boules French game called Pétanque’s in which small balls – that vary from yellows to reds to browns and whites in color – blend into the background amidst the leaf-like shapes.
Created in 1947, this color lithograph with pochoir is hand signed by Fernand Léger (Argentan, 1881- Gif-sur-Yvette, 1955) in blue ink in the lower right margin and signed black in the stone "47 | F. LEGER" in the lower right of the image. Numbered 165/300 in blue ink in the lower left margin. After an original oil on canvas, printed by Guy Spitzer on watermarked Johannot Et Cie Annonay paper and embossed with the Spitzer blindstamp in the lower left of the image. Label adhered on the lower left reverse states "GUY SPITZER, EDITEUR | PARIS | REPRODUCTIONS DE TABLEAUX DE MAITRES | Grandeur Original | FERNAND LEGER | Composition aux Dominos | Tirage numerate el signé par l'Artiste | Limité à 300 exemplaires | Cette épreuve porte le N? 165 [initial Spitzer]."
