David Hockney Painted Environment II, 1994 displays a standard paint room in conjunction with a hyperactive setting. In the middle of the chaotically painted room sits three easel with canvas placed upon them, all using the same general color scheme of the room, which allows them to blend in with the background, while also maintaining their own unique color properties. The shapes seem to be very organic and fit into the grooves of one another. Even the lines at the edges of the paint canvases fit into the shapes around them on the walls. The cohesive nature of this piece leads to questioning about the creation process behind this print. A question such as how the walls, floor, and canvases contribute different aspects of color focus and depth. Geometric shapes are spliced together, allowing color combinations that vividly catch the eye to guide you through the work. The walls are a clash of information, bright reds juxtaposed against a bright blue background. Dark blues and purples act like shadows, creating depth on the two dimensional walls, which harshly contrast the floor as a vivid turquoise covers most of the ground, only interrupted but small dark blue splotches and a large bright red form that sits in the far corner of the room. The room setting makes the viewer feel like they are immersed in the colored room that is printed, an almost hypnotizing view of shapes and colors.
