Historical Description

Damien Hirst Mickey Mouse, 2014 is a fun, imaginative work that echoes the simplicity and nostalgia of youth.

Hirst's interpretation of Disney’s Mickey Mouse is established as a series of overlapping circles which differ in color and size, placed in a way that feeds into the figurative nature of the work, while allowing the subject matter to remain clear.

Iconic black circles sit on the top of Mickey’s head taking place of his ears, imagery that is uniquely Disney. Smaller black circles take position for the eyes and nose, his body a medium red circle that’s shifted to the side, as if he was leaning off-center. Large yellow circles act as the mouse’s signature shoes, joyously kicking his feet around the print. He stares off the page, his eyes languidly taking in the world around. This playful screenprint subverts the classic popular imagery of Mickey Mouse, bringing the joy of childhood into the adult setting of the fine art world.

Created in 2014, this silkscreen with glaze on wove paper is hand signed by Damien Hirst (Bristol, 1965-) in pencil in the lower left margin and is numbered from the edition of 250 in pencil in the lower left margin. Published by Other Criteria, London.
