Chic and simplistic, Damien Hirst’s 3-Methylthymidine White, 2014 is a vibrant and eye-catching grid of colored dots in a rectangular field of white. Four columns and five rows of these dots rendered in several bright colors are methodically placed throughout the composition. Despite its joyful color palette, the work’s systematic arrangement gives it a clinical aura. This orderly quality is further suggested by the title of the piece, borrowed from the name of a molecular compound. 3-Methylthymidine White  is a striking manifestation of Hirst’s exploration of color and experimentation, presenting such explorations in an orderly, removed, and yet undeniably beautiful way.
