Monet Falaises (Cliffs), 1894 looks down the coastline made up of cliffs and rocky outcroppings. The sea is relatively calm – there is movement in the water, and patches of white around the bases of the sea rocks indicate spray. However, no large waves are visible and the horizon is still, the sky calm. The highest cliff aligns almost perfectly with the horizon line, creating a nice upper register in the artwork. Monet brings the scene to life, and one can almost feel the ocean breeze on their face, and smell the salty air. Monet creates a very exposed and solitary landscape that makes the viewer introspective.
Created in 1894 after an original painting Côte rocheuse, rocher du Lion, Belle-île created in 1886, this color lithograph on chine appliqué on wove paper is hand-signed by Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) in pencil in the lower left margin; also hand-signed by the engraver G. W. Thornley in pencil in the lower right margin. From an edition of 25 hand-signed proofs by both Claude Monet (Paris, 1840-Giverny, 1926) and G.W. Thornley; printed by Belfond & Cie and published by J. Mancini, Paris.
