A wonderfully detailed and charismatic portrait, this exquisite work illustrates the technical mastery and artistic vision of Van Dyck. Weston's stately yet approachable expression reflects Van Dyck's refined ability to comfort and relax his subjects, resulting in a realistic and acute portrait. Weston was Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Lord Treasurer of England under James I (1566-1625) and Charles I (1600-1649). He was one of the most influential figures in the early reign of Charles I's personal rule and envisioned and carried out many of the policies that allowed him to rule without raising taxes through Parliament. On February 17, 1633, Weston became the Earl of Portland. Van Dyck depicts Weston with a wide collar, pointed beard, and medallion around his neck. He stands nobly, an imposing figure bedecked in heavy, flowing garbs.
This portrait is a Mauquoy-Hendrickx State I (of III) engraved by Jan Meyssens (1612 - 1670) in collaboration with Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp, 1559 - London, 1641) as part of his Iconographie series of engraved portraits of famous people at the time. The plate has been marked "Antonius van Dyck pinxit" in the lower left and "W. Hollar fecit aqua forte, 1645" in the lower center. Also marked "Ioannes Meyssens excudit" in the lower right. Beneath the engraved portrait is the inscription: PERILLUSTRIS DOMINVS HIERONYMVS WESTONIVS, COMES PORTLANDIÆ | HEYLANDIÆ, etc. This piece is printed on a fine paper with the Arms of Amsterdam watermark (Mauquoy-Hendrickx no. 211), dating this piece to c. 1675.
