Andy Warhol’s Sunset, 1972 portfolios are simple studies of abstracted sunsets, showing off Warhol’s experimentation with color. Repeating the same imagery of a simple round sun slowly disappearing over the horizon, Warhol printed this work in hundreds of different color combinations. Warhol often used contrasting colors in his work throughout his career, exploring which colors drew the viewer’s eye in the most. This is most likely an after effect of his artistic start in commercial design, when the goal is to catch someone’s eye off the street. This makes these compositionally simple prints incredibly captivating. Most of the color combinations are unrealistic and stray from naturalistic colors found in real sunsets, letting the viewer’s imagination run wild. Sunset, 1972 FS II.85 features a golden yellow sun set against a forrest green sky. The yellows, oranges and greens of the work melt together to create an otherworldly landscape.
