Andy Warhol Shoes, 1980 FS II.256 is a captivating print that showcases Warhol's creative skill and his artistic interests. Warhol calls on imagery of a glittery night sky with the added element of the diamond dust, and also that of an x-ray scan, using flat two-dimensional blocks of color to portray the high heels. The shoes themselves represent Warhol's obsession with American pop culture and the country's commercialization of fashion that took off in the 1980s. High heels became tied with the image of a fashionable American woman, and in turn became a source of inspiration for Warhol himself. In Shoes, Warhol simultaneously maintains the iconic shape of the heel and creates abstracted graphic shapes that connect with each other and form beautiful negative space. This print features a more subdued color palette or grays and blacks, accented with the sparkly diamond dust. The simple color choice allows Warhol’s graphic work to shine through in this captivating work, and reminds the viewer even more of an x-ray.
