Andy Warhol Shoes, 1980 is an eye-catching composition of high-heeled women’s shoes, seen from various angles. The composition resembles both a night sky and a fabulous x-ray. Warhol sprinkles the surface of the prints with diamond dust which, combined with the black background, give the work a glittery, celestial energy that perfectly encapsulates Warhol’s artistic style. The graphic silhouette of the various heels, instantly recognizable despite the flat coloring, is reminiscent of an x-ray scan, adding an additional layer of wit to the visually verbose piece. High heels, an object of pure fashion and intrinsically a representation of culture, are a natural choice of subject for Warhol, who was a master of subversively exploring mass media and pop culture imagery. In Shoes, the elegant curve of a heel, the slope of an arch, and the pointed bend of a toe are detached from their commercial purpose of advertisement and instead turned into graphic shapes that connect with each other and form beautiful negative space. The elegant palette of black and white, coupled with the gorgeous diamond dust, endow the print with a sleek charm, playing into the overall chic look of the work and embodying the cultural trends of the times.
