Andy Warhol Ingrid Bergman With Hat (From “Casablanca”), 1983, is a color silkscreen portrait of actress Ingrid Bergman, done in classic Warholian style. The bright colors used paints Bergman’s face in stark relief against a solid blue background and gives a pop-art aesthetic to the work. The portrait feels documentary and photographic, as if capturing a still image from one of Bergman’s movies. Warhol chose to depict Bergman as one of her most famous characters, Ilsa Lund from the movie Casablanca, instead of as herself. This highlights Warhol’s appreciation for Bergman’s work and career, as a fellow artist.
Bergman was someone Warhol admired, according to the publisher of this work Per-Olov Börjeson: “At our meeting in the fall of 1982 we discussed these very ‘Warholian’ portraits and whilst talking about the stars of the cinema Ingrid Bergman’s name was brought up. […] It was during this conversation that the idea of a series of graphic prints to honor the memory of a great artist whom we both admired, was born.”
Created in 1983, Andy Warhol Ingrid Bergman With Hat (From “Casablanca”) is a color silkscreen print. This work is hand signed by Andy Warhol in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 250 in pencil in the lower left.
