Andy Warhol $ (Quadrant), 1982, is a colorful exploration of the merging between commodity and art, an underlying theme in Warhol’s career. Four U.S. dollar signs are displayed in a rectangular grid. Each background color varies and divides that background into four equal parts. The source for the “dollar sign” in this piece is commercial typography, which Warhol would have been very familiar with given his prior occupation as an illustrator for commercial art and advertisements. The bold-type face of the dollar sign is further accentuated with the use of color, composition, repetition and form. The curves and the slash of the iconic symbol are slanted so that they appear italicized. Warhol breaks up the monotony of the composition by utilizing a multitude of colors, and introducing a playful hint of expressionism by way of purposeful misregistration and crayon-style drawing.
Created in 1982, this color screenprint on Lenox Museum Board is hand signed by Andy Warhol (Pennsylvania, 1928 - New York, 1987) in pencil in the lower left. A unique work inscribed numbered from the edition of 60 (each screenprint is unique); published by Andy Warhol, New York; printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York.
