Andy Warhol Ladies and Gentlemen, 1975 FS II.136 is a charming colorful portrait of a New York drag queen. In the 1970s, when this portfolio of screenprints was created, drag queens in New York City were at the forefront of LGBTQ+ activism. Warhol was inspired by their confidence and personality, and decided to create prints based on polaroid photos he took of the queens.  Overlaid with warm brown tones, reds, and purple, Ladies and Gentlemen, 1975 FS II.136 is a beautiful tribute to the vivacious queen it depicts. The idea for the Ladies and Gentlemen series originally came from art dealer Luciano Anselmino. Under Warhol’s direction,  Bob Colacello, editor of Interview magazine, recruited several black and Hispanic drag queens from the The Gilded Grape in Greenwich village.

Created in 1975, this work is a screenprint on Arches paper, hand signed by Andy Warhol in pencil on verso.  Numbered from an edition of 250, aside from 25 Artist Proofs marked 'AP,' 1 Printer's Proof marked 'PP,' and dated '75 in pencil on verso.
