Andy Warhol Kiku, the Japanese word for chrysanthemum, demonstrates his brilliance as a colorist and his marvelous sensibility of design. Set against a white background, the kiku's dissolve into the composition as the gradient of their petals fade in vibrancy. By fading out the saturation of the red, then pink color as you move up towards the top of the image gives the chrysanthemum's the appearance of shining. Vibrant shapes of lively yellow and pungent fuchsia contrast with the quiet emptiness that surrounds them. With an understated grace, silhouetted blossoms emerge in golden lines, creating visual intrigue by engaging with the negative space.
The chrysanthemum's take center stage, and any context that occurred in reality is now gone, and secondary to the lush flowers that command the attention of the viewer.
Kiku (Chrysanthemum), 1983 displays Warhol's expertise in screenprinting and mastery of color - which comes through brilliantly and with many layers. The touches of gold are the finishing touch to the beautiful image.
Created in 1983, this color screen print trial proof is an unsigned unique color variant. Printed aside from the numbered and signed edition of 300, 30 Artist's Proofs, 15 Hors Commerce, 3 Printers Proofs, and 5 Exhibition Proofs.
