Andy Warhol Grapes, 1979 FS II.193 features a cool toned palette of seafoam and minty greens and pale blues to showcase a bursting bunch of grapes hanging from the vine. Warhol was more interested in untraditional still life compositions instead of realistic portrayals. Using flat washes of semi-opaque color atop a sketched line work design, Warhol explores the role of color and shape in transforming easily recognizable objects into visually intriguing works of art. Inspired by a collaboration with French winery Chateau Mouton Rothschild that Warhol completed a few years prior in 1975, the artist expands on themes of wine and grapes as common elements in traditional still life compositions. The winery invites artists from around the world to design new labels for them each year, breathing new creative life into the centuries-old brand and creating exciting and unique artistic projects.
Created in 1977, this work is a screenprint on Strathmore Bristol paper, hand signed by Andy Warhol in felt pen in the lower left. Numbered from an edition of 50, aside from 10 Artist Proofs marked 'AP,' two Printer's Proof marked 'PP,' and one Hors Commerce marked 'HC.'
