Historical Description

Alexander Calder lithograph Untitled Sun & Moon; Hand signed by Alexander Calder (1898 – 1976) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 9/75 in pencil in the lower left; printed on Arches block watermarked paper with a deckle edge along the bottom margin.

The vibrant red-orange of the sun and its rays contrast nicely with the robust black of the moon’s profile.  Their features become conjoined in the center to create a seemingly symmetrical composition echoing the famed ancient Chinese symbol of the Yin and Yang.  As polar opposites, the sun is depicted with a beaming smile and a softened expression – the moon, in contrast, features an altogether different look, with a slight sneer and gaped teeth!  Together, however, they play off each other well in terms of both composition and symbolism: the warm sun being cooled by the quenching moon, light balancing dark, and heat offset by the cold.
