Alex Katz, Chance, 2016 is a set of three monumental portraits captured in the artist’s signature style. The series of three designs consists of three distinct female subjects. Each woman depicted in swim suit holding a beach ball. Against grey backdrops, the palette of Chance, 2016 is muted tones of mauve, yellow, and rose, blue. Despite their commonalities, each figure is posed very differently and each woman has a distinct style. Chance 1 (Anne), is a 30-color silk screen, depicting a posh modelesque woman. Her hair is cropped and slicked back, and she wears dark sunglasses that obscure her eyes. Her black bathing suit has cut-outs along the front. Chance 2 (Vivien) is a 27-color silkscreen, also donning a bathing suit. She wears a modest, two-piece and is posed holding the beach ball high up as if she is about to throw it. Chance 3 (Darinka) is a 33-color silkscreen. She wears a patterned swimsuit in pastel colors. Her hair is multidimensional, and she stands with her hand on her hip.
In a monumental scale, these striking Alex Katz portraits are graphic and powerful. Displaying the intersection of commerical and high art, Chance, 2016 is reminiscent of editorial fashion photography through the lens of Alex Katz iconic stylized vision.
