One of the German Little Masters, Altdorfer expresses his appreciation for humanity and nature alike in Albrecht Altdorfer The Small Crucifixion. Depicting the monumental moment of Christ's crucifixion on a miniscule scale, Altdorfer utilizes varied tones and linear elements to evoke a sense of depth and volume in the small space that this piece occupies. Creating a balanced composition, he places Christ at the center, towering above the two flanking figures at his sides. Tiny angels, two on each side, hover in the heavens near Christ's body, gazing down on the scene below. No amount of detail is lost in this tiny piece, for Altdorfer includes detailed foliage at the bottom as well as buildings in the background that compose a distant cityscape.
This work is printed on a fine, laid paper and monogrammed in the bottom center 'AA.'
